KAYAKING EXPEDITION PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE ALPS

07/08/2018
During the week I covered the photography for Kayak for Blackthorn, an expedition down to the French Alps, which Susie Chassagne from the charity was covering to raise £10,000 for a new garden at the trust which is located in Maidstone, Kent. The trip was not only an adventure but also a voyage of discovery for Susie, she had only started training in the New Year and her first encounter was the slalom course at Argentiere-la-Bessee. This was followed by a stretch of water in the river Durance, known as the Sunshine Run, arriving at another slalom course at Saint Clement in the late afternoon.

The Wednesday and Thursday were two full on days of photography, the criteria for the images was to capture the people involved, sponsors branding on clothing, kayaks and the Land Rover Discovery Sport that Barretts Kent had loaned for the duration of the trip. The scenery in the Alps is breathtaking and myself and driver Al had plenty of stops to capture the Land Rover among the stunning backdrops of the mountain ranges.

In terms of kit I took all of my Profoto lighting equipment, two Nikon bodies and a variety of lenses, the 300mm F4 being favourite of Susie fighting through the rapids. At the end of the week Susie had reached her £10,000 target and i’m sure this figure will keep on climbing. Keep up to date with the sponsorship of the charity by following #kayakforblackthorn
