CHRISTMAS PHOTOGRAPHY & HAPPY NEW YEAR!

31/12/2013
I managed to catch upon a lot of reading over the Festive period, not surprisingly photography magazines were a part of this but also a present of designer Storm Thorgeson's "The Gathering Storm" book took up a days reading/viewing. With 240 pages of stunning imagery and design from one of the most iconic names in album cover art spanning four decades this book is full of inspiration throughout. Storm's designs range from small obscure bands through to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. The latters "Dark Side of The Moon" artwork being the most recognised of all time. I was drawn to Storm's work through his love of photography, and back in the late 60's/early 70's photoshop and digital were decades away. Thorgeson and his design team would always capture the images in camera and do minor alterations back in the studio through the medium of graphic design. So when you see a photograph for a Pink Floyd cover with 800 hospital beds on a beach in Norfolk, that was real, a large inflatable pig flying over Battersea Power Station, again one photo and no trickery plus the majority of the amazing sculptures that appear on the album covers were taken on location and photographed in their surroundings. The book is available through Thorgeson's website and is a fitting tribute to Storm as he sadly passed away earlier in the year.

The photos shown were a collection of abstract images showing the miserable weather, coffee, cars and also some reading material. The abstracts of coffee and car images gave me an idea for a mini project this year which will start on January 1st 2014, rather then do a year long 365 project I have decided to embark upon a series of single shots each day I am not covering a commercial shoot, the theme will be "Autos & Espressos", basically one image depicting a car/coffee themed shot which will form a library of photos throughout the year. I haven't set any guidelines just that one or both subjects must appear in the picture, I will have a separate page for the project on the website and will put a brief description of the settings, should be good fun and quite testing for originality as the year progresses.
