CANTERBURY RUGBY CLUB SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY

16/11/2013
Canterbury got off to a great start with some strong attacking play and an early try only for the lead to go back to Redruth mid second half, with some aggressive attack and intricate passing from both sides during the game it made for some great action shots. The game ended with Canterbury winning 46-22, although it wasn't until a one sided second half display that they took full advantage.

This afternoon was the first outing for the 300mm F4 Canon lens, the 70-200mm with 1.4 converter has served me well and on the cropped sensor of my second body 1D MK4 gives great coverage and flexibility, but having a fixed telephoto allows the action to come closer to the camera, especially with the 1.4 converter (440mm on the 1DX), it only stops down to F5.6 with the converter but with the sunshine during the first half gave me fast shutter speeds up to 1/1000 ISO 800 and pin sharp images. I was hesitant in getting the F4 version, but most sports images are shot between 5.6-8 and its advantage over the 300mm F2.8 is its lighter and considerably cheaper, although it is an older lens now I can't fault it. Pictures are pin sharp and the auto focus of the 1DX works flawlessly with it, a real bargain and the built in lens hood is also a nice touch.
